If you're pregnant and unsure what to do, there are always options open to you and professional help available. Know your rights and makesure you choose the path that's best for you.

The basics

Abortion is a relatively straight forward medical procedure to bring an end to a pregnancy. It can normally only be carried out up to 24 weeks after conception. If there's a substantial risk to a woman's life or if there are foetal abnormalities, there is no time limit.

An abortion is either performed using a course of drugs that effectively causes a miscarriage, or the content of the womb is surgically removed under anaesthetic, general or local. The surgical procedure does involve some discomfort, but this is generally no worse than moderate period pains.

The emotional fall-out of having an abortion can be more significant. That's where support from partners, family, friends and specialist agencies can really help.
